Social mentorship buddy programs aim to not only support language development but also foster integration, build confidence, and create meaningful connections for refugees and new immigrants. This training will help you enhance your communication skills to support these goals. You’ll gain an understanding of second language acquisition, learn practical tips for speaking clearly, and discover ways to stimulate and practice conversation effectively. 

Additionally, you’ll explore how to use communication as a tool to help your buddy navigate cultural differences, build social networks, and feel more at home. The training also offers the chance to exchange ideas and experiences with other mentors, equipping you with strategies to make a lasting impact.

Dr. Maya Lane, an English language educator and curriculum and instruction specialist since 1991, is the creator and Program Director of the NicerFL Social Mentorship “Buddy” program for refugees and new immigrants. She believes mentorship is essential for fostering belonging, building connections, and helping newcomers navigate cultural and social challenges. Dedicated to breaking down barriers and empowering individuals, Dr. Lane has extensive experience in helping immigrants and refugees thrive in their new communities.
