NicerFL- SW FL Newcomer Immigrant Educational Center is looking for volunteers and donations!

We believe that what we are doing at NicerFL Immigrant Educational centers is very needed and timely because more new immigrants and Ukrainian refugees come to our local Florida communities and they are looking for support and the traditional organizations simply can’t meet all their needs. There is a need for more individual and human approach to help them adjust and meeting local residents in small groups and individually provides them with this support to gain confidence and learn important skills and information to better their lives. Our tutors are also mentoring the immigrants by helping them learn about the culture, education, institutions and all other aspects of living in the United States!

NicerFL already has more than 30 amazing tutors- just great local residents who want to help, but we need more! We train our tutors and provide them with the materials they need. Some tutors are immigrants themselves and they share their immigrant journey with the newcomers. Some speak their language which helps immigrants bond and be more confident when they hear success stories of other immigrants.

We believe that this is a very rewarding and personally fulfilling experience for all our tutors!

Our meetings also help many of the immigrants and refugees who have mental health issues of depression, sadness and despair. We have heard from many of our students that coming to the conversation groups has helped them feel normalcy again and has helped with their mental health. It is especially beneficial for the kids who saw war and destruction and then are brought into a new school environment where no one understands them and they can’t have friends. We feel happy when we see their smiling faces and just pure joy that they are with someone who understands them and works with them individually.

Who are our students as they self-report?

Newly arrived Ukrainian refugees and other new immigrants who are looking to learn English, learn about the culture and life in the United States and find community information and resources for new immigrants

Newly arrived Ukrainian refugees and other new immigrants who are stay at home caregivers and can’t attend regular classes

Immigrant Parents who work full time, have a family at home and can’t attend regular classes

Immigrants who don’t have a car or money to get around and can’t go to regular classes

Immigrants who move between locations too often

College age kids who have to work and can’t attend our colleges and universities because of the Florida one-year residency requirement and they need to improve their English

School-age kids who need help with academic school work

New immigrants and refugees who live in isolated locations and have no schools nearby

New immigrants who are highly-qualified professionals and need to learn English and get resources to pursue a new career in the United States

New immigrants who need help with looking and applying for a job and preparing for an interview

New immigrants who attend adult ESOL classes, but report that they don’t learn conversational English and need to improve speaking skills

Ukrainian refugees who are still in Europe waiting to be admitted as refugees

NicerFL is also looking for outstanding professionals in different fields who can organize educational workshops that can help new immigrants navigate life in the USA such as cultural awareness of US culture, financial and career workshops, health and educational resources for families and so many more aspects of adjusting to living in the United States. We plan to organize cultural events where immigrants and local residents can learn about the culture and life of the new immigrants and Ukrainian refugees.

NicerFL was started by a group of immigrants-professionals and educators who want to help newcomers be successful in their new life in Florida. Now we have tutors from all walks of life and this diversity of experiences is what makes our programs unique!

These are our volunteer tutoring opportunities with NicerFL-SW Florida Newcomer Immigrant Educational Center:

English conversation partners for individual work with a newcomer immigrant or in a group at our English Conversation Clubs for New Immigrants in Sarasota, North Port and Tampa.

Academic tutoring for kids-online on zoom and in person at our meetings

Online individual tutors on zoom for adult new immigrants

Individual tutors to meet in person with an immigrant adult at a library or community center

Online tutors for groups of beginner English speaking I am starting to do fundraising as it has become quite overwhelming for my family to cover all expenses. Can I ask you to help me and think about who we can send this letter to? I know it’s too much to ask as you are already doing so much by volunteering but I really want this program to continue and grow and I am not quite sure how to do it. Maybe you can send to people who you know and maybe willing to help us, or suggest people and organizations I can send it to.

Thank you again for everything you are doing. I heard back from the students that they absolutely loved your sessions with you. Here is what I wrote and I will post on Facebook and our blog on the website. So far, it is me doing everything- volunteers, student outreach, online teaching, program materials and I love what I am doing, but I need help!
