Saturday English Conversation and Citizenship Exam Preparation Groups!

NicerFL new immigrant students had a great time practicing English conversations skills on Saturday, May 7. The conversations took place from 11 am to 1 pm in the spacious Arts and Crafts room at the Morgan Center in North Port, Florida. The students split in 2 groups-beginner and higher-intermediate. The beginner group practiced introductions with 3 volunteers- Maya, Jim, and Bruce. In another part of the Arts and Crafts room, Mark led a discussion with a group with more advanced language skills.

Mark shared his impressions of working with the advanced conversation group:

“We discussed “talk show host” questions, with the group breaking up into two people per group. Before we started in the 2-person groups, I had Alex ask me general questions from the list, to demonstrate to the others how to ask and answer such day-to-day type communications. Then, I had them start their answer and question session with each other.
Then, I asked each pair one question about the person they interviewed.
At the end of this, we started talking about typical native wild animals found in Florida (snakes, raccoons, panthers, possums, etc.)
Finally, we started talking about hurricanes. I showed them some of the terminology associated with those (categories, east coast versus west coast storms, etc)
My impressions of the group is that they all willingly participated, had great attitudes, and were all very appreciative for the help.

I just can’t imagine the horror and the tragedy they all must feel leaving their country through such horrific circumstances, going to a new country, learning the language, and culture. I am glad I can help in some small way.”

Citizenship exam preparation group. From 1 pm to 3 pm, our volunteer tutors Maya and Jim tutored a group of 5 immigrants who want to become US for the citizens. The immigrants shared that there was no other place near their home where they could go and prepare for the exam and they were very grateful that NicerFL tutors were willing to work with them.
